From Agriculture to Aquaculture

Our roots

Big Moon Sea Farm was founded on a deep-rooted passion for agriculture. Ian and his sister Gretchen were raised on their family’s fifth-generation farm in the Great Plains of Kansas, where they developed a strong connection to the land and a concern for its future. As the Ogallala Aquifer declined, they began exploring more sustainable paths forward in farming.

That search led them to Cedar Key, Florida, where they discovered clam farming—an approach that not only produces high-quality food but also helps restore the surrounding marine environment. What began as a bold transition from corn to clams marked the start of Big Moon Sea Farm. Working alongside local growers, they learned the craft and built a foundation for the business.

Today, Big Moon Sea Farm is carried forward by Ian, who continues to apply those early lessons and the Stone family’s agricultural heritage. The farm remains focused on sustainability, producing a consistently high-quality product while contributing positively to the ecosystem.
